ZAOU SECURES FUNDING FROM TECHNICAL CENTRE FOR AGRICUTURAL AND RURAL CO-OPERATION (CTA) TO SCALE UP SMALLHOLDER FARMERS CLIMATE SMART AGRICULTURAL SOLUTIONS

The Zambian Open University, School of Agricultural Sciences and Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Co- operation (CTA) have embarked on a 2 year project “Scaling–up Climate– Smart Agricultural Solutions for Cereal and Livestock Farmers in Zambia.”

The project is being implemented in partnership with MUSIKA Development Initiatives, Professional Insurance Corporation (PICZ) and the Ministry of Agriculture, with Euro 449,710 funding from CTA.

Climate change has been affecting farmer productivity and incomes. Therefore this project aims to contribute to improved smallholder climate resilience through increased access and use of stress tolerant seeds, weather and agronomic information, weather indexed insurance and integrated crop-livestock farming systems.

The project intends to reach out to 80,000 direct beneficiaries from the smallholder farming households of the following districts, Serenje, Kapiri Mposhi, Chibombo, Mumbwa, Lundazi, Chipata, Petauke, Nyimba, Kalomo, Choma, Monze, Mazabuka). It is expected that the results will promote private sector investment in weather – based indexed Insurance for the smallholder crop and livestock farmers.

Dr. Kolawole Odubote, Dean of the School of Agricultural Sciences at ZAOU, noted that droughts and floods impose severe economic and social stress and erode adaptive abilities for over 70% of smallholder farming community. He revealed that the project is being embarked upon in Zambia, because of the vulnerability associated with the rain-fed smallholder agricultural systems in these countries. He further indicated that the resilience activities within the Project will help reduce crop and livestock losses while the weather indexed insurance will provide some relief to farm households in the event of severe weather events. Other countries involved in the regional project are Malawi and Zimbabwe.

Wow. Now this is what I call progress. The agricultural sector that has received less attention over the past few years. My district Mumbwa will also benefit from the project. I am happy.
