The Directorate of Quality Assurance and Extension Services

The specific objectives of the Directorate are therefore:

  • To manage the implementation of University policies and regulations related to quality assurance, learner support and extension services
  • To manage the development and implementation of the University Quality Assurance Policy and Operational Framework
  • To provide professional support to Schools/Directorates/Centres in implementing their internal quality review and improvement procedures and processes
  • To develop institutional and human resource capacity for quality assurance, learner support and extension services through relevant training and professional development programmes and activities
  • To coordinate the development and delivery of extension programmes and the implementation of the University Learner Support Model
  • To monitor the implementation of systems and mechanisms for receiving, analysing and utilising feedback from learners and other stakeholders for improving service delivery
  • To support the implementation of the University Strategic Plan, policies and management systems, in general.

The following are the key operational or functional areas of the Directorate.

 Quality Assurance

  • Facilitating the development and overseeing the implementation of policies, Strategic Plans, Annual Work Plans, Strategies and operational frameworks
  • Managing implementation of quality assurance regulations, procedures and processes
  • Monitoring the performance of teaching staff in the delivery of courses, learner assessment and provision of academic support to learners
  • Monitoring and evaluating the delivery of programmes/courses and learner support services (including the submission and marking of assignments and related)
  • Quality assuring instructional resources, policy documents and delivery systems
  • Monitoring the development, production and distribution of course materials
  • Collecting information and reporting on the performance of management systems
  • Collecting information and reporting on the implementation of University policies, the Strategic Plan, Annual Work Plans and operational frameworks
  • Proving training in open and distance learning (including instructional design, quality assurance and learner support)
  • Learner Support Services:
  • Providing information and distributing relevant documents to potential and current learners
  • Compiling students’ queries for action by relevant officers in the University
  • Responding to students’ queries on various aspects of course delivery and the operations of the University more generally
  • Distributing and keeping records of course materials
  • Maintaining assignment records
  • Planning and managing training of staff for learner support
  • Supporting management of Residential Schools
  • Supporting course registration and administration of examinations
  • Attending to information and management needs of  Regional Centres

Regional Centres

ZAOU has nine Regional Centres, namely Chipata, Kabwe, Kitwe, Lusaka, Livingstone, Mansa, Mongu and Solwezi. There is a district Coordinating Office in Mumbwa. The Centres are run by Regional Managers whose main responsibilities are:

  • Overall management of the Regional Centre academic activities
  • Managing the Centre’s human, financial and material resources.
  • Identifying and recommending part – time tutors
  • Arranging and managing Residential Schools
  • Coordinating and supervising tutorial services
  • Assisting in managing admissions, course registration and learner assessment
  • Liaising with relevant/collaborating/partner institutions and organisations
  • Managing distribution of course materials
  • Establishing and supervising district study centres
  • Teaching in their areas of specialisation
  • Supervising undergraduate research projects
