Prof F.D Yamba

Professor Francis Yamba holds an MSc (1972) in Mechanical Engineering, specializing in Heat Engines from the Moscow Road and Construction Institute, former USSSR, and PhD (1978) from Leeds University, UK and specializing in Combustion in Aero Gas Engines. Upon Graduation in 1972, he worked briefly in the Ministry of Transport and Works where he served as Mechanical Engineer at Mechanical Services Department Headquarters in Lusaka, and later as Provincial Mechanical Engineer for the Western Province until December 1973. In 1973, he joined the University of Zambia, School of Engineering where he has risen from the position of Lecturer through Senior Lecturer to Full Professor between 1973 and 1996. 

He served as Head of Department of Mechanical Engineering from 1980 to 1983, and was appointed as Dean, School of Engineering until 1987. From 1987 to 1994, he was seconded to ZIMCO, where he served as Executive Director at INDECO (1989) and as Managing Director at Engineering Services Corporation (ESCO) (1994). He is currently serving as Director   at Centre for Energy Environment and Engineering Zambia (CEEEZ).

In his 50 years of professional and academic experience, he has served on various Boards of Directors  including National Energy Council which had very wide advisory functions on energy matters to the Government of the Republic of Zambia,  TAZAMA Pipelines Limited, Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation, Environmental Council of Zambia (ECZ), Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA), and Energy Regulation Board (ERB). He is currently serving as Chairman of Board of Trustees of the Industrial Training Centre and Chancellor of Zambian Open University

 Prof Yamba has wide experience project management and research, having supervised and participated in over 80 projects in Climate Related Studies (compilation and analysis of national data, GHG inventory studies, climate modelling and adaptation and mitigation analysis; Energy Related Studies (energy modelling, planning and management, and Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency feasibility analysis and applications. He pioneered work in Clean Development Mechanism through development of projects in hydro, biomass electricity generation, biomethanation electricity generation, energy efficiency and biodiesel production). He also contributed towards development of the mitigation component of Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) for Zambia. He is among the (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) 700 scientists worldwide who had been awarded the 2007 NOBEL PRIZE for Peace together with former USA vice president Al Gore.

In 2006, Prof. Yamba was awarded the Business Leaders Partnership Forum Award for academia for distinguished achievements that has impact on society. In 2018, He was bestowed with the Environmental Award for Outstanding Contribution to Environmental Management by Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA). On 24th October 2018 (Independence Day), at the Investiture Ceremony, he was awarded The Order of Distinguished Service: First Division by the President of the Republic of Zambia.
